Croatian is a South Slavic language spoken by about 5.5 million people, mostly Croats, and in 1991 it separated from the Serbian-Croatian language standard. Its standardization is still a work in progress. It is very similar to Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin. It is distinguished by the emphasized linguistic purism and the tendency to replace foreign words with domestic ones.
